Charles & Eleanor Schweizer

American History Teacher Award

 

Purpose

The Illinois Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, whose mission and objectives are patriotic, historical, and educational, wish to identify, recognize, and commend Outstanding Social Studies Teachers.

Award Description

The winner will receive a cash award of $500 along with a plaque or certificate.  The winner may also be considered by ILSSAR for submission to the National Society Sons of the American Revolution for the Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award. The award will be presented at ILSSAR's annual meeting the first Saturday in May 2008 and annually thereafter.

How to Enter

The ILSSAR invites all social studies teachers, whose approved curriculum teaches students about the Revolutionary War era from 1750 to 1800, to apply for the Charles and Eleanor Schweizer American History Teacher Award.  The educator must teach in a middle or high school, college, or university at a recognized public, private, or parochial institution in Illinois.

Applications may be obtained from this website, from any ILSSAR chapter, or from Harry Windland, 106 Lakewood Dr., Glen Carbon, IL 62034-2986.  The completed application may be submitted through any ILSSAR chapter

Rules

In addition to the application, applicants must submit a 500 word essay discussing the importance of teaching the American Revolution era and any extraordinary teaching techniques or innovative projects utilized by the teacher to teach the Revolutionary War. 

A signed letter of recommendation, from the principal, department head, or dean who endorsed the applicants application, should be included with the application.  The letter should state why the applicant is an outstanding teacher of American History. 

In addition, a one-page autobiography highlighting the applicant’s educational background and achievements is required. 

All materials must be typed/printed on 8.5 x 11 standard paper and submitted electronically or through the mail.  All materials submitted will become the property of ILSSAR.

Judging and Awards

Submissions will be judged by the ILSSAR American History Teacher Award Committee whose decision is final.  All applicants will be notified through the US mail of the contest results.
